Holiday Snaps 29 Feb 04

I suppose I feel a bit of a cheat when I paint from photos. But I often do. When on holiday I like to draw and sketch. I have tried painting out of doors but I find it hard work. In the winter when I'm searching for something to paint I often end up going through old holiday snaps looking for inspiration. I try to use the photo as a guide only and I usually find that at some point in the painting I forget about the photo and let the painting take me. Its fun to try to change things like colour and I often end up changing the weather too. Anyway, here are some paintings done from holiday snaps.

Oil

This was on the Loire in France. Those are chalk cliffs behind the houses.

Oil

This was in Brittany.

Pastel.

This place is not far from where we now live in Shropshire.

Pastel.

Brittany. Thats my wife Linda and my three daughters Louise, Katherine and Susan. They were looking for crabs amongst the rocks.

Pastel.

This is in Northern Spain. When I took the photo I was sitting in the car and the rain was pouring down. I decided to make it sunny.

Pastel.

Brittany again. The view behind me when I took this is the River Estuary shown in the oil painting second from the top on this page.
