Black and White Stuff 29 Feb 04

This is a little trick I learned as a kid and it has fascinated me ever since. You may already know it.

First draw any shape like this. It has to be a closed shape so the line has to end where it starts.

Then draw lines from one side of the shape to the other. They can take any route, be straight or curved and even have loops. The only restriction is that they have to start and end on the perimeter line.

You can aso draw closed shapes within the main closed shape.

Then fill in one of the cells. You can start at any cell. Then fill in alternate cells like this until all the cells that you can fill in are filled in.

It turns out that if you follow the rules correctly you will always be able to do this without having 2 adjacent cells with the same colour. For example 2 white cells which share a common 'border'. I'm sure that some clever dick has proved this mathematically.

This is a variation on a theme. This shape is one continuous line which has loops. You can make these as complicated as you like almost like a ball of string and then spend a happy afternoon filling in the cells.
voila!

Here are some lino prints based on this theme. Click on a picture to see a large version of it.
